Is camping on public land legal in the UK? - camping land

There is camping on public land as a village square is legal in the UK? If not, then I need a permit from the council or something similar?

Not 100% sure, but my stock of free access to land in England and Wales is illegal
"Access to land wild camping is open under Schedule 2 of the land and Rights of Way Act of 2000" prohibits

However, Scotland is legal, when you have finished responsably (eg roads FOM over 100 feet)
"Part 1 Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 gives everyone the right to legal access to most land and inland waters. The people have these rights only when it is exercised with responsibility, privacy, safety and environment and the livelihoods of Scotland .
The Outdoor Access Code Show Scotland Scotland for more information.
